Opening resizing and relocation
Widen, enlarge, or relocate window and door openings for more light and bigger impact units, with the structural work done correctly and to code.
Want a bigger window, a new slider, or more light? We resize and relocate openings as part of your impact upgrade, handling the framing and code details properly.
What window opening resizing actually involves
Window opening resizing means changing the rough opening in your wall so a new window or door fits where it should. Maybe you want a wider picture window in the living room, a taller slider to the patio, or you are filling in an old opening that never matched the room. We cut or build out the framing, rebuild the header so the wall stays sound, and resquare the opening so the new impact unit sets level and true. On a load-bearing wall, that header sizing is not a guess. It is done to carry the weight above it.
Most of this work runs 1 to 3 days depending on whether it is one opening or several, and whether stucco and drywall patching is part of it. We handle the permit and the county inspections in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach, so the opening change is signed off, not just patched over. Owner-operated crews do the framing, the install, and the finish, no subcontracted labor passing the job around.
Relocating an opening and keeping the wall code-compliant
Moving a window or door to a new spot is more than cutting a new hole. We close the old opening with matching framing, sheathing, and stucco, then frame the new one with a properly sized header and king and jack studs. In Broward and Miami-Dade you are in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so the replacement unit needs a Miami-Dade NOA, and the buck and fastener pattern get installed to match that approval. Palm Beach sits in the wind-borne-debris region under Florida Product Approval, same idea, slightly different paperwork.
Doing it to code is also what protects your insurance credit. When the new impact window or door is installed and inspected correctly, it counts on a wind-mitigation inspection, which can lower your premium. A single-panel impact door commonly runs about $2,500 to $4,000 installed, and relocating its opening adds framing and finish work on top. We walk you through the scope before anything gets cut so there are no surprises.
